alternative to costumes
By Amy

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi! I just wanted to let you know what the first graders at my school do instead of wearing costumes for the Halloween Party day. The first grade teachers in my school got together to try to find an alternative to the children
wearing their costumes/makeup to school for our annual Halloween celebration. We thought that the costumes were somewhat of an inconvenience because they were hard to get on/off for restroom break time, often got ruined or torn during lunch or recess, and were sometimes just really inappropriate for school. So, instead of the children wearing their costumes, we decided to make
our own Halloween shirts. We have each child bring in one white T-shirt or sweatshirt. Then we use black and orange fabric paints and Halloween sponges and each child gets to sponge paint his/her own shirt for our special day! We bought a couple sets of Halloween sponges (a cat, bone, pumpkin, haunted house, and a skeleton) at a craft store to keep and use each year and have each student also send in 50 cents to cover the cost of the paint. This seems to help out with the costs if you have a large grade level (we have about 150 first graders) and the parents don't seem to mind because it is something they can wear for a few years if they send in a larger size shirt! We really like doing this with our kids each year, it definitely makes our first graders stand out from the rest of the school! Plus, they turn out really cute and the kids love to wear them and show them off because they are proud that they made it
