Dawn, I would start the students at the level they are at now and progress from there. If you need to use the second grade books I'd go borrow them from the 2nd grade teachers. I definately wouldn't hold the kids back at all. You could also do groups with trade books in your groups. I do this in my classroom and it works out fine. The students are still exposed to the first grade books, however some students will see 2nd grade books. I also have students this year who are reading at 2nd grade levels. I am planning on working with them on comprehension as well as raising their reading level. Why hold them back??
