an extension of your stoplight system
By j

Clip to ScrapBook
Since you are already using a stoplight system, why not try cutting out three large circles--one red, yellow, and green. When you are having teacher-directed instructional time and you need silence, put up the red circle and tell students this is their silent time. When a minimal amount of talking is required, switch to yellow, and when they can talk freely, use green. Laminate and post on your board with magnetic tape for easy mobility. Then the signs can also travel wtih you in the hall, to specials, and at lunch. The kids might just buy into the novelty. Give it a try.
