Suggestion for Ida...
By Melanie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello. You wrote about difficulty coming up with consequences and i thought i'd share with you what i do in my first grade class that has worked fairly well as a consequence so far. I planned a star theme for my class, and
at the local teacher supply store i found some individual behavior charts with stars on them. These charts are for stickers (you know, the little shiny star stickers that have been around forever). I made a bulletin board titled 'Star Students' and every child has a star with his/her name on it attached to the board with a push pin. The first time a student misbehaves (breaks a rule),
I give a warning. If it happens again, that child's name is removed from the board. At the end of the day, I have the students take out their 'star charts' and I put stickers on all the charts of those students whose names have remained on the board. When a chart if filled (I bought the kind with 20 boxes) that student gets a prize from the 'treasure chest'. I really build up those students who get their stars, and few actually 'lose' theirs in a day. They know I mean business when they get their warning, and they usually suffices to deter further misbehavior. Although 'stars' are my theme, this could be creatively altered to fit any themes or ideas you may have. Hope it's helpful!
