Sixth grade is not like any other grade, but it can be the most rewarding. This is my second year teaching (both in the sixth grade) and I learned early on the bellwork is a lifesaver. All you really need is a word, phrase,| or math problem. All of these are posted on websites all over the internet. Which as I know you know by now is a great way to find all kinds of information. When students come in my room in the morning they know that they will be working on reading skills. I have collected stories with questions (off the internet at #####.com , from other teachers, I've even created my own) they | | come in read the story and answer the questions. In a few weeks I will change the bellwork from reading to writing to help the kids get ready for the ACTAAP test. My sister (also a teacher) sometimes makes up words like snookerly and has the kids make-up a meaning or use for the words. I've tried this in my classroom and it was a lot of fun. Whatever you use, be sure to go over it with the class. Good Luck!!!
