Titanic Ideas
By Jane

Clip to ScrapBook
Not sure if this would work, because I am not aware of your grade level, but could you share the passanger list of the Titanic with the students, and then let them pick one person they'd like to represent, such as Captin
Smith or Lady Duff Gordan. Have them research their person using the Internet and such. Then, have them write a letter or diary entry posing as that particular person on the date the Titanic began her fatefull voyage. Ask them to think about how exciting it would be to be on such a luxerious ship, ect. Another writing idea, depending on the age of your students, would be to have them write
the obituaries for the people on board the titanic. Use a newspaper to review obits and what is in them. (Definatly for older students).

Hold a debate on how the rich were allowed in the life boats first while many of the steerage passangers were locked below decks and drowned.

For social studies, review what types of laws came into effect after Titanic sank, such as life boat space for each person.

For history, discuss the marconi system and review how S.O.S was first used on the Titanic. Have each student make a Morse Code message.

For math, figure out how many could have really fit into the life boats, considering some were sent out with only a few dozen and could have held 60 people. How many still would have parished.

Discuss why they thought the Titanic was unsinkable. Do students really believe that people back then thought that was true? Show students anything made of iron and steel, can in fact, sink. Hold a science experiement to see what types of material sink or float.

Discuss if there was any that the Titanic could have stayed a float, such as if the person steering the ship would have hit it head on, would it have flooded and sunk so fast.

I hope these help some. Good luck.
