Math motivation
By Joanne

Clip to ScrapBook
I had to buy a book for a course I took and it is called WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM and it gives great ideas how to teach problem solving within Math using experiences that are meaningful to children of that age group. It goes over
a 3 year period beginning around Grade 1. I have used many of the ideas and have had wonderful success. Just an example: Who has the biggest smile in the classroom? Use brainstorming techniques to find ways to come up with the answer. Also, which colour is the class' favorite? We used crayons in the class to find out the answer. Also, if there were 6 ducks, how many could be yellow
and how many could be brown? The list goes on. Probability- how many red ones in a Smarties box? We did this after Hallowe'en and used the small snack size to find the answer then they came up with ideas how the smarties get into the box.
Good luck.
Joanne
