I filled their book boxes with about 8 books on their independent reading level. We have a great leveled library, so this was very easy to do. I changed these every other week or so. It took time for me to do it, but I didn't mind it. The kids were so excited to see their "new" books. Each student was also able to pick 3 books from our classroom library for their book bins. This was done once a week-usually Monday mornings when they came into the classroom. I do not have my classroom books leveled, so that's why the lesson for choosing good fit books is good. Also kids who pick above their independent reading level can always read the pictures and retell a familiar story (from the lesson on how to read a book). I like giving the kids some choice over what goes in their book bins. It's highly motivating, but I also like to make sure there are books on their independent level. Also when a group would finish a book in guided reading, they'd take the book home for a night or two, and then bring it back to school and put it in their book bin. I usually collected these every other week when I put new independent leveled books in their bins. At the beginning of the year, I will have their bins filled (they won't choose) until after the lesson on choosing good fit books.
