Clip to ScrapBook
Well, there seems to be lots of that going around!! I can remember when students would sit quietly through the whole day (we did, didn't we?) But, I've noticed that, over the years, each group gets just a little chattier.
You're right - sometimes nothing seems to work, or it doesn't work for very long. Here is my theory - we are complaining about it, but I'm beginning to think that we (teachers) have created this monster. At one time, all teaching was directed - teachers talking, talking, talking at the kids. Then, we started cooperative and group learning, as well as lots of hands-on and discovery
type lessons. These encourage talking and interaction between the students. As long as we are hearing "constructive talking" it is acceptable. I think that, especially with 4th and 5th graders, they become so used to talking that it feels like the norm. Just my theory - but it feels right to me. I find that I just sit on them harder and have to squelch the talking sooner than later, before it gets out of hand. What do you think?
