another version of sparkle
By jl, fourth grade

Clip to ScrapBook
I play sparkle in a similar way, only with pencil and paper. I divide the students into teams of four or five. One person has the paper and pencil. I say a word and that person writes the first letter, then they pass the
materials to the second person who writes the second letter and so on until the word is finished. The person who writes the last letter says, "SPARKLE!" If they spell the word correctly, they earn a point for their team. I only give the point to the first team that says sparkle and spells correctly. You have to listen carefully for the second and third place teams in case the first team
in makes an error. The kids love this game and beg for it each week. Other variations: the entire team can whisper the letters to partners (to help poor spellers), if a teammate gets the paper and notices an error, he/she can correct it, sometimes to make a huge challenge, we play backwards sparkle and they have to spell the word backwards! This game also works for 3 or 4 digit addition, multiplication, division, etc. It is a lot of fun.
