Thank you, JL! You wrote my exact sentiments. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm not sure how much more meaningful we can get with such a subject as spelling.

By the way, has anyone ever played "Sparkle" with their
class for spelling practice? Have the students stand in a circle. Choose a student to begin and work clockwise. Announce a spelling word. The starting student says the first letter of the word, the next student says the next letter and so on. Whoever says the last letter of the word turns to the next in line and says "sparkle." That means the next student must sit down until the
end of the game. The teacher then announces another spelling word and the spelling continues with the next person in line. It's a game of skill and luck. My students love it. I'm not sure how meaningful it is, but it's fun!
