Getting a Jump Start!
By Melissa

Clip to ScrapBook
Hey Melissa,

I know that things are difficult for you right at this moment, but hang in there.I feel terrible for you! But just think in about a month you will have things all squared away and a great group of children
will be anxious to learn in your classroom. It could be worse! You could be without a teaching job!

I'm sure that you would like to be planning and getting things ready. I'm assuming that you are an elementary teacher but I'm not sure.

You can begin planning for any grade level by:
*writing a welcome letter to the parents and children introducing yourself. Tell them that you have

an exciting year planned for them. Also let them know how you will be communicating with them (newsletter, weekly reports, etc.)
*create daily folders to keep yourself organized
*Make a list of must do-s before school starts
* I like to buy a quick inexpensive treat/snack for the kids on the first day. You may want to pick one up!
*plan some get to know you activities that can be easily changed for any grade level.
There are tons on this website!!
*set up a hanging file crate for student work
(eg. Friday Folders, Writing Portfolios etc.
*begin thinking about your classroom rules, procedures, expectations etc.
*gather all of your teaching materials and have them ready to go so that you can set up any classroom. Don't wait until the weekend to begin packing your personal desk supplies, books, files, etc. Label EVERYTHING with your name
*Once you are able to get into your room, start by organizing the students' desks and then focus on making the room inviting. The children will understand that you did not have a lot of time to set up. Most children will be glad to help you decorate and this will give them a sense of ownership too.
*begin working on a welcoming / catchy phrase bulletin board that can be set up in a flash
*Check the book page on Proteacher and find several book titles that can be read at any grade level on the first day of school. Keep those books handy!

I hope that everything works out for you!Once you get into your room, don't be afraid to ask for help from your colleagues. I teach third grade and I would be glad to offer any advice if you ever need it.

I wish you lots of luck!
Joy
