Previous postings stated that districts (even schools within some districts) in California have the option of 20 students in K-3. Our district has opted for this, with the exception of Kinders. Our poor Kindergarten teachers
have 32 -34 children in their classes. I am constantly amazed that they are able to accomplish/teach anything. They are truly saints!! State cap for 4 - 6 (self-contained) is 32. However, districts are able (not sure how, exactly) to raise that cap. Our district caps us at 34. All 3 of our 4th grade classes started the year with 34 (good news - no new ones during the year).
With that many bodies in the room, too much time is spent on discipline, reminders, etc - even with a good class (which I have). Just too many people in the room! Oh, how I would love to have 28 again. It's amazing which activities you have to cut out of your day with a large class. Good luck to everyone this year - regardless of class size.
