I like to gather students in a circle and start off with the phrase, My name is Mrs. Smith and I like to eat......" This goes around the circle with the next student to say the same phrase and fill it in with what they like to eat. We then go back to the start of the circle after each student and see if we can remember everyone's name and what they like to eat. Then they illustrate what they like to eat, I write in the phrase for them and we make a class book out of it. We have also done classroom books and charts for Down by the Bay, Happiness is......., Magic Words (please,thank you etc). These books and charts provide lots of text in the classroom for shared reading throughout the day that is meaningful to the students.
