What we are doing is called Reading Mastery. Basically, working in small groups, you point to a letter or word and ask what it is. And the words you use are all written down. The children answer as a group. If the children
don't know, you tell them, then ask again several times. The letter sounds and words are drilled into their heads. It is a lot of memorization with no discovery or real thinking on the child's part. I saw a movie last week that showed kindergartners doing it and they looked like robots. I don't believe in it but have no choice about teaching it. I don't know if Madeline Hunter
is the same thing but if it is direct instruction, then it probably is something similar. And you are right, it isn't recommended by the colleges, because in my opinion, it isn't real teaching.
