I find that the students love to draw. To start them off, don't tell them you are "bad" at art because nobody is ever bad, they are just refining their skills.
First, I introduce how to do a blind contour draing. Using their shoe, the artist draws a picture of their shoe by following their eyes along the lines in the shoe and NEVER looking at their paper. If they look at the paper, then they are trying too hard. To illustrate this to them try drawing your hand on the whiteboard. Have a volunteer come up to act as a watcher to see that your eyes never leave your hand(or the Object you are drawing). Then draw your hand while you look and compare the drawings. This gets you to pay attention that line is an important factor in art. Don't worry about how the shoes and hands actually look...the technique is what's important.
