Our school teaches cursive in 3rd grade with a review in 4th. Often they learn it but are not required to use it unless they have a specific handwriting assignment. When the children get to me in 5th grade, many say
they can't write in cursive or it is too hard. I maintain from the beginning that they write in cursive for everything(unless there is an O.T. issue.) Everyone moans and groans and it is difficult for some in the beginning, but they improve rapidly. Only writing final copies or once a week does not get it into their muscle memory the way daily practice does. You will be surprised how
quickly children are able to write fluently and express their ideas without a struggle. The time you put in now will pay off QUICKLY! (When I taught special ed students I had the same requirement and they were shocked at how well they were able to write!)
