It's Important to Remember...

that it is your job to meet the students where they are. It is often easy to blame past teachers for shortcomings of students. This isn't fair to those teachers, and it's not professional to complain about this, especially in the company of those teachers. (I hope you aren't doing that.)

It's terrific that you are in the the classroom pushing your students to think critically. Check out Barry K. Beyer's Developing a Thinking Skills Program for concrete suggestions for boosting critical thinking in the classroom.
