First two weeks procedures By Debbie

Hi J.T., No, you're not going to spend the entire time teaching procedures, but you do need to model and have them practice these more than once, in order for the kids to know what to do while you're working with small groups. Our PE teachers did video shorts of playground and school behavior. The kids watched this, then went out to try things... You might start by brainstorming expectations and add to the list for at least a week. Each time you have a community meeting, discuss celebrations and concerns, both behaviorally and academically. Then you can help the kids categorize these and put | | them into positive terms, ie. Be kind and helpful to others. Treat the materials and learning tools at school with care. You'll need to show them where the supplies are in the room and how to manage them, clean up procedures, how to find and put away books, etc. You're also going to have to model what to do during each part of the day-what quiet reading and writing looks like, voice volume for various tasks. Lots of little things, but if you address them now, it's a whole lot easier later. While you establish these, you might have them do reading and writing interviews, and your beginning of the year assessments so you have some baseline data for growth throughout the year. If you want suggestions and places to go for these, please post or email... ;-D
