I agree...

that rewards can be effective, but I don't believe that they should be the norm. Students should learn that in the real world, people don't toss them a movie coupon for showing up for work, or completing a task. I tell my students that *my* reward for doing my job is, 1) the great feeling I get from knowing that I worked hard, 2) seeing them learn, and 3) a paycheck at the end of the month.

I have taught with teachers who give students expensive treats and I often wondered how well those students would behave once the fancy toys dwindled away. We need to teach children that their self-control is not up for sale.


I think Emerson said it best: The reward for a job well done is the doing of it.
