Attribute Blocks
By Helen

Clip to ScrapBook
About 10 years ago I brought back this idea from a workshop and I still use it....
It is hard to describe without drawing it for you, but I will try.
Use a sheet of tagboard. Draw a sort of map..it starts at the left
with one road, then branches into two..then off of each of the two you draw circles, kind of like cul-de-sacs. Laminate the sheet..then with vis-a-vis or dry erase pen write things like : curved, not curved, blue, not blue, think , not thick, big, small, etc...I label attribute shapes with small pieces of masking tape, putting each child's name on one. They then begin a trip on the
left and finally park their shape in the area that fits. ex. as they go by a cul-de-sac that says blue, if their piece is blue they leave it there, if it is yellow they keep going. I put the pieces on their desks and when they come in in the morning they pick it up and place it on the map. I go by later and see any out of place, call only those kids for a short reteaching session. Hope this makes sense.
