Reading Groups
By rth

Clip to ScrapBook
Working in groups is a good way to meet more of students individual needs. Generally, I begin meeting with each group for 20 - 30 minutes. I find that it's difficult to keep the students focused at centers and independent
seatwork for more time than that.

I meet with three groups a day. With twenty five minutes for group time, the students doing seatwork usually complete one or two short activities, and the students at centers generally have time to complete the center activity and read quietly at the book corner.

I allow five minutes between groups to check on the progress of the students working

independently and at centers. While I'm scurrying around the room to check their progress, the students in my reading group are reading on their own.

I change the center activity each day, so I need only four center activities each week. On Mondays I do whole group instruction, so we do not use literacy centers.

Hope this helps.
