calming down

I have the kids come from in recess and put their heads down on their desks for about 5 minutes. The lights are off. Some years I have had story time and that works well. Lately my classes do a handwriting lesson. They are so quiet when we do these (I don't know why). Later in the afternoon about an hour before dismissal we have a bathroom break and drink of water. It gets them out of the room and moving so the last part of the day is managable.
