calming activities By CD

When I worked 1st grade inclusion with several adhd children, we always let all the students get a drink (the fountain was in the room)and then go to the rug for a quiet story time after they returned from recess. It was| nice to have the lights off and the children seated (hopefully next to someone they didn't have difficulty with). Some children needed to sit in chairs at circle because otherwise they were prone to leaning on other kids or had a hard time not squirming. It really depended on the individual kids. If they need additional time after the story, try having them return to their seats and | | draw a picture of the story (to check or aid comprehension)and write about the picture if they are able to. You could also make up simple worksheets that correspond to the story and have them do written response or whatever you think is appropriate. I have a 5th grade class now and reading after recess is a structured activity that seems to bring kids "down". On occasions when we are unable to do this, the students are more hyped up or distracted and the same was true when I was in first grade. I'd would really keep it simple and structured until the children are used to the routine and then add more complex activities. And honestly, sometimes it is just nice to share a story and leave it at that; for pure enjoyment with no activity afterward! Good luck and I hope this helps a little
