Reason TO smile

I am a first year teacher and was given the same advice "Don't smile until December." But, to me, a smile can say a million different things. ...I respect you
...I am happy to be here
...I am relaxed and in control of the class
...I ENJOY kids
...I am friendly and you can be yourself in this room
...School is fun! Would I REALLY want to wait until November to come across like this?! No way. I think there is a fine balance between being firm, fair, and consistent and being walked all over. But, I really don't think my smile is going to tip the scales.
