I went to a conference on classroom management and the speaker suggested a sign in and out sheet where they must first sign out with the time and sign back in with the time. I tried it with my 3rd graders and it did eliminate the ones that weren't serious after the novelty wore off. It also helps you see patterns and have a record you can discuss with the students. I didn't need it for last year's class but maybe this year!
