I got the wonderful opportunity to work with a 7th grader from the Ukraine, (close to Russia) who actually spoke Polish, Russia & Ukrainian! This child never took an ESL class and learned English QUITE RAPIDLY...before the school year was out, he not only learned the language but had far exceeded his peers in terms of academics..I disagree with ESL period, because just like special ed, TOTAL IMMERSION is the absolute KEY!!! I had the same occur with a Chinese and Korean student. It was amazing!!!! Truly!
