Cattiness By Michelle

I had a huge problem last year in my class with a group of about five girls that, although individually very nice, together became monsters. They were so catty towards the other girls, and like you said poke at those "little"| things. One girl was so upset by how they treated her and made fun of her BACKPACK that she ripped her bag on purpose so that she didn't have to bring it to school anymore. The boys that I had were so easy going and fun. I tried to not give them any opportunity in my class to have a spare minute to pull their tricks. Also, I spent a lot of time on character education and self esteem | | games. People who spend time picking on other people are usually not happy with themselves. I also kept all the girls separated seat wise, and stayed on top of where little conversations were going on. Also, if you get a little tidbit of information that they would consider "juicy" use it to your advantage. I accidntally found something out about their little social lives, and kind of teased them with it. They couldn't believe that I knew. I told them that I was like "The Great Oz" all knowing and all seeing. They were mystified and really watched themselves in front of me. It seemed to alleviate the pressure on some of the other girls when I took an active role in their issues. Good luck though, this age is fun, and I can't believe some of the things they do and say!
