LIT GROUPS By srw

I did a similar thing as far as "jobs". However, instead of mine having a different job each day, mine had a different job each week. I had my students (18) divided into 4 different reading groups, depending on the book they choose. Each day they did one of the following: 1--Job card (as explained in previous posts...I had a Discussion Director, Illustrator, Connector, Word Wizard) 2--Meet with me...I arranged this so that each group would meet with me the day after they had job cards. Therefore, I got to sit in and listen to all their discussions, answer any questions and give them some discussion | | questions of my own. We might also read some of the book together during this time. 3--Comprehension assignment (this was typically a weekly reader type assignment) 4--silent reading (they were assigned a certain number of pages to read in their book during this time.) 5--Lit. activiy--this was a written response to a question, venn diagram of characters, an acrostic of characters, etcIt worked well and they managed it wonderfully. I also had DEAR time everyday where we would DROP EVERYTHING AND READ for 30 minutes a day. During this time they would read their self-selected book. They also had to read 20 minutes a night. Every morning they would come in and journal a response to the 20 minutes they read the night before. I checked them at the end of the week, to make sure that they were keeping up with their reading and comprehending what they read. I gave them a 25pt grade for journals. Between lit sets we would do some whole class activities and read some out of the basal. (I was new last year so I tried a variety of things.)
Hope some of this is helpful. Let me know if any of it is confusing.
