I just had lunch with one of my past students who is now at U.C. Santa Barbara in her senior year. We were talking about memorizing as a way of learning and she stated that she knows all her states and capitols. Her 5th grade teacher taught them a song and she still remembers the song. This does match up with the research on music and learning. I'm sure there is a song somewhere about states and capitols, or even better have the students make up a song. I would give it a try--good luck.
