first day?!

It is my first year teaching, and I am teaching full time, half day kindergarten. I start in a couple weeks. I am boggling my mind about whether I should be very strict the first day or not. I have just finished a position in a nearby urban district where I had to me more strict or I would have been taken advantage of. I don't know what to expect here. I don't want to have a chaotic class, but I want the kids to like school. Is there a rule of thumb?
