I can easily say hundreds of elementary teachers in our rural area have trained with Elena Bodrova and the Vygotskian theory of early childhood development. So, you could read up on her: http://nieer.org/about/bio.php?PersonID=7

Basically, young children need to control themselves (self-regulation) and their fine muscles, eye hand coordination, etc before we can expect them to copy letters.

Graphic practice begins by allowing children to 'draw' something they know, either things in their life or experiences in the classroom. We went outside and crawled around looking in the grass(when school started). when we came inside, I turned on the music, and they drew grass (up close). So, basically lines going up and down. When the music stops, they stop. We sorted tuttie fruitie by color and then drew tutti fruities (little circle with even smaller circles inside). As the year progresses, you might have them draw a wall and a ball that has rolled up against the wall (b). When our praying mantis hatched out, we drew sticks with dots on the for them.

But alas, it is getting to be spring, and I am feeling less then creative right now. :-(
