I use for fourth grade a book called "Imagination Works" that I got from the teacher store. It uses critical thinking skills and can be done independantly. It is located in a center called the "Imagination Station". The kids look forward to getting to go there when they finish their work early.

I also bought a book that teaches inferencing. The students read a poem and make inferences. This can also be done independantly.
