Hi Aimee,
I read about your theme and I came up with a few ideas. I hope they help a little.
You could create a large can shaped character( comic) to place in the center of your board. There is a really cute
one that has been created by DJ inkers if you can find it!

Then you can create small cans with the lids popped up for each child. At the beginning of the year you can ask each child to write or tell you one thing they think that "_____ graders can do".
After the board has been shared at open house or parent night you can begin to record what each child can do on a strip of paper which

can hang out of the popped lid. I am picturing something that looks like the banner on a Hershey kiss.

Additionally, you might want to ask your school cafeteria for a big can to keep on your desk. When a child shows you that he/she can do something, you can add a piece of paper that says
I can ________________. After a certain number of slips have been added to the can, maybe you can reward your class.

Here's another idea! In the beginning of the year or around the holidays you can ask each child to bring in a can that can be donated to a local food bank.

I hope that these ideas make some sense.
Happy teaching,
Joy
