Agree to disagree By Tina

I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you, Melanie, but it was hard for me to understand how an entire grade at a school which has been created just to segregate gifted children from the rest of the population could| consist of a single sex. If the post had read, "My gifted class (which happens to be funded by public dollars) consists of all white kids. What should I do differently?" and a response to that read, "Well, the other races are silly. You should have an amazing year," I don't think my post would have been considered an attack as much as an outcry for justice. When a teacher sees something | | unusual or wrong happening in his or her system, he or she really should question the circumstances surrounding the problem and look for a possible solution. Parents of gifted girls also want their girls to be challenged. Sometimes barriers are set up within prominent cultures and races so that outside cultures and races "choose" not to crossover into that turf. You can call this particular class situation anything you want, but from my point of view, it's nothing short of sexual discrimination. I guess if I saw something wrong I could "chill out" or let it go; however, if everyone had that attitude, our children would still be attending "separate but equal" schools. Melanie, I challenge you to question the people who made up your class roster. Question the people who administered the IQ tests. Question the administrators at the schools from which your students are pulled. Find out what's wrong. Don't chill out. Tina
