Assessment
By Suz

Clip to ScrapBook
My school district mandates the CBM assessments in math and and reading. However I find simple writing samples like having them interview another person in the class and writing a little bio more helpful. I can tell how
they interact with others as well as if they are about the writing with purpose have a beginning middle end not to mention conventions. I even have them draw a picture of the person they interviewed which lets me know how creative they can be.
The first week I spend playing math games. You can quickly see who needs help with basic computation and number sense. I use the districts
mandated CBM test to fill in the holes.
For reading I use the BRI (Basic Reading Inventory) I take anecdotal (sp?) records during the passages and ask the comprehension questions at the end.
Hope this helps a little. Its tough to get the initial assessing done in a short amount of time. Good luck
