This is my second year teaching 5th grade. I put a journal question on the board every morning. The students have to come in, do their attendance and immediately begin writing in their journals. It is a wonderful way to get the kids to come in and sit down. Some days, I spot check, or I may take them up on Fridays and occasionally we share them. I have had very good luck w/journals. I supplied the folders & paper, (no excuses now). Most of the entries are "all about me" so I can get to know them as a person better. For instance, describe your bedroom, write about your favorite movie,(favorite anything)etc.
