fruit loops, toothpicks, marshmallows always a hit
By Jessica/3/MO

Clip to ScrapBook
For this lesson have the kids make a cart up to whatever place value you are studying. Then you give them one toothpick and marsh for each place. Give them a pretty hearty pile of fruit loops and have fun. To start I usually
write the number on the board and talk about it, then the students build the number by placing the correct number of fruit loops on each toothpick for each place value. Later you can just say the number and watch them build it. This is a real concrete visual for place value.

Another "game" is to set up chairs in a straight horizontal row. Create a set of number cards (0-9). Hand

out the cards to students and have them create the number you dictate. You can have them move and make the greatest number, the smallest number, the number where the 7 is in the tens place, etc. You can also make this musical chairs where you play music and students walk around the chairs until the music stops and then they sit where they are and show their number card. You can call on someone to read the number correctly and they can take someones place. I also call up people to become the commas.

Hope this helps I have a whole file of ideas like these but of course they are at school. E-mail me if you would like some of the others.

Good luck
