    The point is that the poster said it was impacting his academics.

    I agree to speak with the OT- perhaps you can incorporate some whole class trunk exercises and stretches. 5 minutes twice a day won't hurt.

    Also, those exercise balls are tricky and do you really want to have the kid tipping over in class? I mean, I laughed it off at the gym but I'm not sure a 3rd grader can.

    Have choices as far as sitting on the floor or even bench. Many of my "nudgy" students need the choice of standing so they work off energy (I know this isn't your little guy's problem, but again, make it a choice for everyone.)

    I would not say anything to the family. I would not make any comments about nutrition unless it's to the whole class regarding snacks. I used to graph healthy snacks, then a parent got on me saying it's not the kid's fault there was only Doritos in the pantry. Whole other story there!

    The issue is how to accommodate so his weight does not interfere with academics. You want to chat about participation and stamina but apparently he's been doing fine. We as teachers need to find ways and some accommodations may help- I second going to the OT for advice.
