I agree with you wholeheartedly. I start my day with free choice reading...I think it is that important. The kids put their books on their desks when they leave each day. The next morning they put their homework, notes, etc.
on their desktops and start reading. Meanwhile, monitors do any needed jobs, I take role quickly and go around and lookover and collect homework and have little mini-lessons 1:1 if anyone had trouble or is missing their work. Any remaining time I listen to kids read. This takes 15-20 minutes and still leaves plenty of time during the morning to have reading groups using trade books or
whatever your district requires. Free choice reading is always a choice when other work is finished and there are endless supplementary projects you can do to encourage more reading.
