I use literacy centers in my classroom in the morning while I work with Guided Reading groups. My class is made up of 4th graders who function from a low-second to 6th grade reading level. I always have a center for reading comprehension...a short piece to read and then do activities with. I also have a vocabulary center that I get from the Wordly Wise series. A third center is poetry, and the fourth is Accelerated Reader. I have a rotation system set up with a check off list so I can tell if someone isn't accomplishing all centers. So far, so good. Oh, we also spend one period a week in reading at the computer lab...writing in our "journals" about our week.
