Hi, Jill. I teach fifth grade, but I play a game at the beginning of the year that might be fit for fourth grade as well. It's called Truth or Tale. A child will come up to the front of the room and tell three statements
to the class. Two of them will be false, and the other will be true. They have to be really creative in that they may already have friends in the class who will know the true statement right away. The goal is to stump everyone! You can do one first for the class as an example to model, and it also helps them find out a little about you. They end up wanting to play this as a reward
all year. Another introductory game I like to play is called Hello Judge. Place a chair in the back of the room facing away from the entire class. Ask a child to sit in the chair. When he or she is seated, quietly choose a person to come to the front of the room and say, "Hello, Judge" out loud. The person in the chair has to try and figure out who it is. If they guess it correctly, that person goes to the chair and you repeat the process. It helps the kids learn the other classmates. Hope this helps! Good luck this year!
