Journals
By Traci

Clip to ScrapBook
I still do journals in 4th grade. I don't do it on a daily basis, the students who hate to write get a lil' sick of doing this plus regular writing activities. I usually give a topic or story starter for the students to write from. Sometimes I'll give them a "free" day in which they can write about anything they would like. The topics help them with the state writing assessment.
For the journals I have the students use a folder instead of a regular notebook. They put lined paper on one side and the completed journal entries on the other. I correct a few journals a day and this makes it easier to carry home than a bulky notebook!
Hope this helps.
Good luck with your first year. 4th grade is a great grade to teach, this will be my fourth year.
