My kids absolutely LOVE writing in their journals! I have them write daily, and many days they can't wait to share what they've written. I usually give them a prompt to write about, and then give them 10 minutes or so to| write. I tell them their pencil must keep moving. This is hard for some at the beginning of the year, but after a while they really like it. I do not grade for accuracy - this is their time to put their thoughts on paper and to NOT worry about punctuation, spelling, etc. I am amazed at how my students' writing abilities change throughtout the year. Those that didn't know what to write | | in the beginning of the year beg for more time to write towards the end of the year! I believe writing in their journal helps to increase their confidence in themselves as writers. Use journals consistently, and you'll never go without them! Have a great year! There's nothing better than teaching!
