pets

Yes, guinea pigs can cause allergies, hamsters and mice too (I would expect rats too but Alberta doesn't have any rats so I don't know much about them).

Fish are an option, but some people are allergic to the algae in the
water.

I also was allergic to the cedar shavings - although there are some shavings I believe you can buy that are supposed to be dust-free, allergy free, but are also fairly expensive.

As far as sending the pet home on weekends - I wouldn't advise it. Most pets do not do well with tons of change every week. For longer holidays it should be fine. Most caged pets are fine for the

weekend as long as their water bottle is very secure and full. Most can last without food but only a very short time without water.

I would start by checking first with your Principal about the school policy involving pets. If there's no problem, then a note home asking parents about allergies. This is also good if any students want to bring in a pet for show and tell.

I was allergic to my hamsters but it didn't really bother me that much - the shavings were a bit worse and then I got a rabbit and I was fine with him.
