Hamsters are nocturnal animals and leave much to be desired as far as human interaction during the day. They get a little upset if they are disturbed from slumber and tend to nibble/bite fingers. I agree that of the two guinea pigs are best. Use cedar shavings to cut down on the noise problem. But do be careful about allergies and make sure that your students wash there hands after playing, feeding etc. so not as to spread an potential illnesses.
