Clip to ScrapBook
We too use ability grouping and as the Special Ed. Resource teacher, I work with the lower group.
I believe that self-confidence plays an important role with my group and their success. (I too have mixed feelings with
ability grouping and have done it both ways.) Because they realize that they are all on the same level, they tend not to be as shy and become more outgoing in the intimate setting.

With mine, though, we are able to spend more time on the actual SKILL of reading and comprehension than we would if they were mixed. I agree that they need a model, but that can be obtained at other times

during the day in other content areas.

For your lower group to succeed they need not only a model but the attention and direction of how to decode, decipher, etc.

I am by no means an expert, but so far, it has worked well with my kiddos.
