Because of Winn-Dixie is a great light hearted, funny book about real life experiences. The kids can identify with it. It kept both me and the class on our toes and laughing. Note, it does have some sad parts and deals with family issues (like divorce) but it does so in a up lifting way. It also opened up the door to some great reflective journal writing.
