WOW! 32 first graders! Do you have an aide/assistant? My collegue (who has taught for 20 years) is stressing out because she has 24 again. First, I would have suggested Harry Wong's FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, but I see you've
already read his book. Are you using 'give me five'?
Try SMART DISCIPLINE. You can use a pocket chart with sticks, or make a grid for each child to keep at your desk.
Here's how it works. Make a list of behavior problems you want them to change. Then make a list of rewards. Explain to the class the behaviors that should change. If you use sticks label them 1-8. On sticks 4-8 list from
least to greatest rewards. Place these in the pocket chart. Rather than placing a students name on the pocket, use Harry Wong's suggestion of test numbers. As the children misbehave, pull a stick. 1-3 are their 'free chances'. After that, each stick pulled will have a privilege written on it. They will lose that privilege for 24 hours.
