I agree that it is hard to motivate students to read more advanced material when they are trained to believe they can't. What you might try, which really depends on the time in your day which is always limited is to implement a literature circle group as well as the regular leveled reading groups. This way in lit circles, students choose the book they want to read (you give five options ranging from easy to hard)regardless of difficulty. They choose by interest which motivated them to want to read it. Like I said, the only problem is making time for it.
